Eating in Vegas

Las Vegas offers a veritable eating bonanza. Celebrity chefs from all around the world offer their gourmet delights in nearly every major casino in town. Cheap buffets and loss-leader meals still exist, mostly in the Downtown joints, but world class gourmet cooking is on the up and up. Vegetarians are not so well catered for with only a few options in most places. For the most authentic ethnic flavours in town look to the Eastside or the Westside. All sit-down restaurants serve alcohol, but remember that the legal drinking age is 21 years.

Most upscale places pour wine by the glass and several 5-star restaurants offer world class wine lists. Better to drink bottled water rather than tap water which can ruin a good meal. The standard gratuity is 15-20%. A “service charge of 15-18% is often added for groups of six or more.

A $1 is a standard tip at buffets. At casual places where you order at the counter tipping is optional. Advance bookings are recommended at the bigger name eateries. Virtually every casino in Las Vegas has a 24-hour café so it is always possible to get a meal, day or night.
