The Hoover Dam is one of the world's tallest man made diversions.
At 726 feet it has a striking beauty, with its imposing concrete
curves filling the dramatic red rock canyon, with the brilliant
blue waters of Lake Mead as a backdrop. It is situated about 34
miles (54.4 kilometers) from Las Vegas, and was constructed in 1936.
The reason the huge dam was constructed was to control flood waters,
improve irrigation, generate hydro electricity and provide a regulated
supply of water to the city of Las Vegas.
The lower Colorado River irrigates a million acres of land in the
U.S.A. and a further half a million in Mexico. It supplies drinking
water for about 25 million people and generates 4 billion kilowatt
hours of electricity hours every year. Guided tours of both the
interior and exterior of the dam are available.
During the summer of 1994 (July) the Hoover Dam had its thirtieth
million visitor. Visitors touring the dam totaled 279,205 This mighty
man- made wonder is well worth a visit.
